An agonist is a drug that binds to a receptor of a cell and triggers a response by the cell. An agonist often mimics the action of a naturally occurring substance. An agonist produces an action and an antagonist blocks an action of an agonist. An agonist example would be 2-Bromomelatonin which is used in applications for sleep disorders and pre-anaesthetic medication.
